The Busyness Badge of Honour: “I’m so busy I did not even have time for lunch today!”
Are you always the first in the office and the last to leave at the end of the day? Do you then go home and continue to answer work emails? Do you spend your day dashing around getting a hundred and one things done, manically multi-tasking so you can reach the end of the day just for the same thing to happen tomorrow?
What is the purpose of all this mania? Is it so you can complain, “my life is so stressful!” Could it be the case that you are busy without a focus? Do you take on too much? Should you learn to say NO once in a while? It is time to STOP and THINK: what is my goal? Why am I so busy?
Why not write yourself a To Do list of what you want to achieve in your career and in your personal life. These can be small things, they can be big things, the idea is to find out why you are working so hard and whether you really need to.
Does your list include things like:
- Pay the bills
- Buy a bigger house
- Have a dream car or holiday
Work out how much money you actually need to pay your bills. Are there any outgoings that you don’t need to pay (do you really need that gym membership?), or that you can find cheaper somewhere else? (it is always worth shopping around for cheaper car insurance).
Do you really need to save up for a bigger house? How many bedrooms do you actually need? If you re-jiggled your current space would you be more content? Do you really need THAT car? Could you hire one once in a while for a weekend and satisfy your itch that way? If the answer is that you do still want these things than put a deadline to them. These deadlines can be moved, but by having them in place it will give you more focus and stop you from aimlessly working away at a goal that has no finishing line. If it turns out that you do not really need these once longed for items than now is the time to cut back on the panic and create a new list.
Don’t forget that whatever your goals for the future are, make sure you enjoy what you DO, and what you have NOW. Don’t forget to see the pleasure in the little things, and remember- multi-tasking is not always the answer to getting lots done, as sometimes the pasta burns in the pan whilst you are quickly answering an email and then you have to start all over again.
If you think an app would help you track your goals, whether big or small, strides is a good recommendation. Always stay motivated and on track with flexible reminders and beautiful charts to help you achieve your goals.
